Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:21 New International Version
There are seasons when the weight of the world presses so heavily on our hearts that it feels difficult to even lift our eyes. Violence, tragedy, and confusion leave us reeling, asking, “Where do we go from here?” In these moments, the natural pull is toward despair or fear. But as followers of Christ, we are called to a different path.
Jesus Himself acknowledged the brokenness of the world: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). These words remind us that the presence of darkness is not new, nor is it beyond God’s reach. Though the heaviness of the world may swirl around us, our anchor is secure in Him.
So how do we walk forward? First, we bring our heaviness to the Lord in prayer. The psalmist tells us, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you” (Psalm 55:22). We do not carry sorrow or confusion alone; we carry it into the presence of the One who understands it fully.
Second, we remember that we are people of light. Paul encourages us in Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” In times of grief and uncertainty, we resist the temptation to respond with bitterness or fear. Instead, we love boldly, serve faithfully, and let our gentleness be evident to all.
Finally, we cling to hope. Our hope is not naive optimism that things will simply improve, but a living hope grounded in the resurrection of Christ. This hope assures us that no matter how heavy the moment feels, God is still at work, weaving redemption into every thread of history.
Today, let us lament honestly, pray fervently, and shine steadily. The world is heavy, but we do not carry it alone. Christ carries us.
