“Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.”
Matthew 7:26 New International Version
The sand is not a good place to build your house. This is true at the Oregon Coast where wind and waves and storms are constantly eroding the coastline, especially where the house is built on shifting sand.
Jesus taught an important lesson using that picture, “If you don’t listen to My words and put them into practice, your life is built on a foundation that will fail. The storms of life will come and you will have nowhere to stand and your fall will be very great.” (my paraphrase).
But Jesus also taught an important lesson about building your house on a sure foundation, “If you do listen to My words and put them into practice, you will be building your life on the Rock. No matter what may happen, you will not be shaken.” (again my paraphrase).
What is your life built upon? Upon money, or your health, or a strong economy, or a good job, or a great marriage? These are all good things, great blessings from God, but they are not the foundation for a believer.
Jesus Christ is our Rock, our sure foundation. “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone!” (Psalm 118:22) His Word and His promises are sure. You can build your life upon what Jesus has said and what He has done. The Cross and the Open Tomb, the promises of God’s Word, this is the bedrock of our faith.
As the children’s song says, “So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you’ll have a life that lasts! Forever! Hallelujah! Jesus is our Rock!”
