Traveling on an adventure can be a way to enhance one’s perspective on life. It’s an opportunity to see new places, meet new people, and learn something new about yourself along the way. This can happen no matter where you go, whether it is to the other side of town or halfway across the world.
Sometimes the adventure comes to you.
In Hawaii, people enjoy learning about those who visit their state, so much so that they gave the activity its own colloquialism: they “talk story.” Whether you’re visiting a local attraction, or standing in line at the grocery store, be prepared to talk story. It’s fun.
Talk Story happens at home as well. Whether we are at a coffee shop or in a church fellowship hall, we may find ourselves striking up a conversation with a stranger. Neither knows the other’s background or biography, but sooner or later some common ground is found. Perhaps it’s a pet, or a common line of work, but a casual conversation can make a day better for all involved. It can result in lifting a person’s spirits when they’re feeling low. A smile, a friendly “hello,” or a pleasant affirmation can change a person’s day.
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”
Hebrews 13:3 English Standard Version (ESV)
We don’t always know where a person may be sojourning in life. They may need someone to listen and to care. They may be lonely, and a chat with another person, however trivial, can help them remember they are not alone. An affirmation may change a person’s view of themselves, or perhaps an affirmation from them can be the balm your soul needs that day.
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,”
Philippians 2:3-5 ESV
Being “Jesus with skin on” can make more of an impact in an age where it’s all too easy to “like” a person’s digital status. We can bridge the gaps among the lonely and create community in a positive way.

My mom was so good at the “talk story.” It used to drive me crazy too! Now, I find myself doing it, too. I realize now why it is so important. Thanks for the reminder, friend!
