Who but God Is Our Solid Rock?

“God’s way is perfect.
All the Lord’s promises prove true.
He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.
For who is God except the Lord?
Who but our God is a solid rock?
God is my strong fortress,
and he makes my way perfect.”
2 Samuel 22:31-33 New Living Translation
Aren’t rock foundations majestic against a blue sky? There are formations like this in many parts of the world, standing formidably above their surroundings. We want to be like this—awesome, powerful, seen, able to face any obstacle or challenge.
While this looks beautiful and impressive, it’s all an illusion. Years of erosion have changed its structure and it’s crumbling. The wind sandblasts the face of the creation over time. Rain and snowmelt weaken the ground beneath the foundation and can give way in a rockslide. Earthquakes shake it to its core and destabilize it. Eventually, it will crumble. When this world ends, it will be reduced to ruins.
We want to be like this structure, strong in our own power. We want to control our own life, our own circumstances and others. We want to be God. Even if we think our cause is important or noble, we can never succeed on our own. The only rock that will never erode is the foundation of our faith, Jesus Christ.
You are so valued and important to Him! God has a plan for everything, including you. You may be discouraged because you feel like your chance at significance has passed. You may feel like you haven’t done anything “big” for God. But the light of His love lives in you and that love is the world’s greatest need. That’s what God asks of you, to step out with His courage and love others. It’s His most significant request of you as you love Him. He won’t let you down. His love for you will always stand strong.
