“Let not your hearts be troubled…”
John 14:1 English Standard Version
This week I began my sixth decade of the time God has ordained for me on Earth, and there’s one lesson I’m learning with increasing frequency. Nothing is permanent! Since this year began a dear friend moved unexpectedly, we’ve been navigating the throes of retirement, and loved ones have died.
I don’t like change.
After the jolt of its realization fades, I’m left to process the pain that comes with change.
Last week, my trainer told me he is taking a promotion at another gym. It’s a great move for him. I’m happy for him, and the next chapters in his life.
However it’s a change for me, and processing another change has brought some pain.
He has been faithfully working with me as I’ve lost weight, gained strength, and gained confidence, but I have unanswered questions. Who will train me now? Can I continue boxing? Can I stay focused on my health journey without a trainer?
Over the last fifteen months, I have received an abundant education in exercise and wellness. I can write my own fitness routines. I know my aging body’s limits, and where I can push for optimal results. Also, I’m obtaining certification so I can help others the way my trainer has patiently helped me.
As Christians, we may have a favorite Bible study leader (whose meaty lessons leave us burning to learn more), or we look forward to hearing a preacher (whose sermons resonate with our life circumstances and give us direction).
Sooner or later, however, change inevitably happens. It always has, and it always will.
We can decide to live in the glory days of a mentor’s presence, or move forward with what we have learned and share it with others. We can seek new accountability partners as we continue our faith walk, knowing with absolute certainty that Jesus will never leave us.
He will never change.
May Christ’s assurance sustain us in the days ahead.
“I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
