Stay Curious

One of my pleasant memories as a child, was going to church and seeing the large stain glass windows. I loved the colors and the way the light would hit them and made the color pour out on the pews and all the people in church.
I don’t remember many sermons from when I was a kid, but I do remember the images on the stain glass. They all told a story! I would just gaze at them and get lost in the shapes and faces.
This image of stain glass depicts the nativity, where we see a shepherd visiting Mary, Joseph and Jesus. It’s such a familiar scene, one that is recreated every Christmas season in the form of nativity sets at the foot of the tree, or set on a table somewhere in the house.
Even in this simple image, I have so many questions: Why is Jesus not depicted in vivid colors? Why is he in a muted earth tone? Joseph is holding a light, is that a reference to Jesus being the “Light of the world”? Is the shepherd kneeling as an act of worship? The expression on Mary’s face is hard to read, does that reflect the confusion she must have felt?
It is ok to have questions about God, about the Bible, about Jesus. Our Lord invites our faith to be a curious one. In Matthew 7, our Lord says,
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened”.
English Standard Version
I pray that you remain curious in your faith and keep asking questions. For me, I would ask people at church what they thought the stain glass windows meant. I heard wonderful answers!
Talk to others about your faith, your questions and your hopes! You will find people that want to encourage and support you in your walk with Jesus!
