“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
Matthew 6:20
Okay, so I get a little obsessive about storing firewood for the winter. At last count I had three sheds full of wood, with more on the way! After all, you can never have enough firewood! Or so it seems…
So I have planned well for a long, cold, winter. However, what about planning well for stored up treasure, not for winter but for eternity? Jesus explains that His followers are not to store up treasure on earth that is going to burn up, but that they need to store up treasure in heaven.
What does He mean?
Maybe it means that our priorities, in this life, are all upside down. We plan, worry, store up, and accumulate all sorts of very temporary treasures on earth, but forget about our eternal treasure. To put it more simply, we focus on “stuff” and not on Jesus.
You and I may verbally say that Jesus is our priceless treasure, and that knowing Him is more important than any other thing, but what do our actions say? Do we spend time with Him daily and invite Him into every area of our life? Do we follow Him wherever He leads, even to the cross, or is He relegated to our leftover time?
Whatever I treasure more than anything else is my god. So I pray, “Lord Jesus, make be obsessively focused on You, and You alone, above all else. Forgive me my fascinations with other treasures. Nothing, Lord, is more important than You. Make my life reflect that belief…”
Amen! Jesus, You are my priceless Treasure!
