“…being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6
To the casual observer this looks like just a field of dirt, but to the farmer this is the beginning of a great harvest. A mundane activity, breaking up dirt clods, is the humble beginning of planting, fertilizing, spraying, growing, and then the harvest. The farmer sees in this simple beginning the glorious end.
So it is with God and your Christian life. With such a humble beginning as some water, and God’s Word, will come a great end. Beginning with your baptism, the Holy Spirit plants, cultivates, nurtures, and matures you. Beginning with God’s promise, and God’s small beginning, will come to a great end.
It is God who is working in you, giving you life, grace, and mercy. It is God who gives the growth, directs your way, and uses all things, both sunshine and rain, for your good. It is God who, in the midst of your despair and confusion, sees you standing in glory with the Lord Jesus. It is God who began that good work in you. It is God who will bring the harvest, the completion, and the final triumphant “well done.”
Lord Jesus, thank you for my baptism in you. Thank you for your work on the cross, your resurrection, and your second coming. Thank you that you are doing the work in me that will bring me into your glory, in that great and final harvest. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
