Navigating the world is difficult. We want to believe our intentions, as well as other’s, are pure. How often do we get caught up in what the world says is good and right, which turns our mind and thoughts away from God?
And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you]. Romans 12:2 AMP
This [superficial] wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly (secular), natural (unspiritual), even demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder [unrest, rebellion] and every evil thing and morally degrading practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure [morally and spiritually undefiled], then peace-loving [courteous, considerate], gentle, reasonable [and willing to listen], full of compassion and good fruits. It is unwavering, without [self-righteous] hypocrisy [and self-serving guile]. James 3:15-17 AMP
I’ve been caught in the trap of selfish ambition, an element of the superficial, even after I became a Christian. I disguised the selfish motive as “doing God’s work.” God removed this negative element from me, though painfully, and I am now able to truly work without the underlying current of selfish ambition.
Living a superficial life causes us to make decisions based on what we see and experience in the world. Moving into the spiritual aspects creates a deep well of living and work that is beyond the superficial elements of the world. That said, there can be depth within the superficial work. Since most work is rooted in superficial elements, we can tap into the deep roots of Christ and plant seeds in those areas.
The deeper things come from God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. If you feel like you are living a superficial life and are desiring more depth in your journey, then pray. God will answer your prayer in a unique way that is just for you.
