Learning to laugh at life.

There’s a song that was released in 1984, sung by Depeche Mode, called “Blasphemous Rumors”.  The chorus articulates the way many people have felt at one time or another,

“I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumors
But I think that God’s got a sick sense of humor
And when I die
I expect to find Him
Laughing.”

I agree that God has a sense of humor but not that it’s sick or mean.  Still I have felt the sentiment of this lyric at times. Sometimes when life is happening I want to stop and say, “Really God? Are you kidding me?”  It can seem like life is just God’s joke on us.  Each time we negotiate one sticky situation the next one pops up.

We might feel like we’re in this hot air balloon.  It seems we’re moving whichever way the wind blows  and when we look up, expecting a beautiful rainbow of God’s promises, we are greeted with the view of a jester laughing. We seek out God and instead of finding the answers we’re hoping for we feel like He is mocking us from a distance.  We are in our little basket with hardly any control over our circumstances.   We don’t feel safe.

How we feel isn’t based on truth.  At times like this we need to remember who God is. He is Sovereign and loving; we can trust Him. He does not leave us floating alone.  Instead He leads, protects and provides.  We know that it is better for God to be in control and not us. We can wait and listen, certain that He will answer.  Thankfully He has more control than a balloon pilot.    We find joy in every situation by trusting that God is strong and God is good. Knowing this we can enjoy the ride laughing along the way.
