Taking Risks

Trusting in Jesus

Our image for consideration is from the “Garden of the Gods” in Colorado Springs. I love the red rock juxtaposed with the blue and white sky. You would be excused if you failed to notice a tiny speck of a rock climber on the lower left of the image. What a daring endeavor!

Are you a risk taker? Do you ever attempt to accomplish a feat that takes courage and seems to be a daunting task? Do you get out of your comfort zone and feel the thrill of excitement that comes with doing something challenging?

I am a risk taker. But I’m not reckless! I suppose it would depend on who you ask.

In Matthew 14, we read,

“And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Matthew 14:29-33, English Standard Version

In that moment, Peter took a risk. He is definitely a “leap first, look later” kind of a guy. Maybe he is a little like the rock climber in our picture: Taking a risk to life, but hoping the “lifeline” will save him. I can imagine it is a surreal experience to be in such a dangerous situation.

I wonder how God may be calling you to get out of your comfort zone today. What risk is there to take that would grow your faith walk and serve your neighbor? How might taking a risk bring God glory? These are great questions to ask, but only you know the answer.

My prayer for you is that you know that trusting in Jesus isn’t a risk at all! It is a sure foundation, a mighty fortress, a solid rock. Thanks be to God for giving us a Savior that calls us to trust in Him!
