“You shall teach [these commands] diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
Deuteronomy 6:7 English Standard Version
Our house has been doubly focused on babies this past two weeks. First, because we have just celebrated the birth of our Lord Jesus and secondly because our son Tim and his wife Kim and their baby son Henry have been with us visiting. This is a picture of Grandma Margaret reading to Henry.
I am sure Henry will spend years going to school, but we all know that the real learning about the important things of life come from our family. We learn as we sit in our house and travel to and fro and when we lie down and when we rise up. It is the day-by-day lessons of life that shape who we are and what we believe.
As I watch Tim and Kim investing time in their son’s life, I am thankful that Henry will grow up knowing that he is loved and directed not only by his parents, but also by God. It is in the love and nurturing and encouragement and direction and correction of our parents that we first learn about whom God made us to be and His love for us. Jesus Himself was taught by His parents and grew up in wisdom and favor with them and with God (Luke 2:50-52).
It is in our family that we become the person God made us to be and there we learn about how God loved us so much that He gave His own Son for us. That is the amazing love that our heavenly Father had for us in giving His own Son to die for us! May the Lord give you joy in your family as you learn of Him daily! Amen!
