“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 English Standard Version

I’m roughly three-quarters through an autobiography. Not my own; as tempting and terrifying as that may be. This particular narrative documents the early life of acclaimed author and theologian, C.S. Lewis. I wanted to know his story because I admire his work–both his literary prowess and his evangelism.

A few things have thus far been confirmed. 1.) I need my phone handy to google book references and words that Lewis utilizes in his nonfiction prose, thanks to his extensive vocabulary and library. 2.) The most important affirmation of all: God has created us for a purpose, with the perfect plan (for our own good) to use the gifts He’s given in order to fulfill our calling and finish the good works He’s prepared in advance for us to do. Phew. That sentence was intense.

Let’s pretend we’re drafting an outline of our autobiographies. Think about your life story. What are the high points? The turning points? The sticking points? Can you pinpoint particular moments that clearly show God’s active hand at work? A better question: can you identify a single moment where He wasn’t at work? Perhaps you’re right in the middle of a moment right now. Something is challenging your faith. Maybe you’re clinging tighter, seeking His guidance, in constant conversation. Maybe you’re doubting, confused, wondering why and when there will be an answer–preferably one that aligns with your vision, right?

It’s astoundingly difficult to view trials as gifts; especially when you’re right in the midst of it. But I’m a believer that it’s what God does in, through and as a result of adversity that we more deeply and earnestly grasp His ultimate gift. That right there is the reason James tells us to consider it joy when we face hardships–because of what it produces. We know He’s drawing us near, through various means, to enable us to seek more, hope more, persevere, encourage and share our testimonies. To God be the glory.
