One cloudy day I was driving down a country road. I saw the clouds part and a bright sliver of the sun shine through.  It looked as though the heavens were opening and the Lord was about to return to Earth. It was an awe inspiring moment.

Throughout history there have always been discussions about the end times. Some scholars, and authors, devote their entire career to the topic, studying historical events and catastrophes, in an attempt to predict the timing of Christ’s return. Many rely on science to determine when the world will end, not believing He is even coming back.

“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.”
Ephesians 1:19-21 New Living Translation

During Advent we focus on the promise Christ made to return to earth on the Day of Judgment. Some people are fearful of this time, afraid of God’s wrath. Some can’t wait for God’s return and pray for it every day. In reality, we can’t possibly imagine what that day will be like when that day comes.

But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment.
Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness.”
2 Peter 3:10-13 New Living Translation

As believers we can be assured that no matter what events take place on that day we will be safe in Christ’s loving arms. We don’t have to fear the day when Christ rips open the heavens and descends to earth. His power and majesty will reign forever. Our faith and trust in Him secures a place for us in Heaven for all eternity. That is His promise to us.
