The Big Event

Yogi Berra once famously said, “No one goes there anymore, it is too crowded.” I am sure that you have been to big events before, places where it takes a long time to park, a long time to get into the building, into your seat. Once you are in, hang on, because you are in for a big show!

So for me, one such big event was Game 3 of the 2016 World Series. It was the first World Series game at Wrigley Field since 1945! Let me tell you, it was a bit of a madhouse. There was tight security, and there was a sea of people in every direction, before and after the game. Sadly, the Cubs lost that one by a run, but the game hung in the balance on every pitch.

In Revelation 7, we read,

“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

If you don’t like crowds, or big events, then heaven may take some getting used to. The picture for our devotion is from a youth gathering, a stadium filled with young people praising the name of Jesus. I like to imagine that is a prelude to what eternity can be.

Ultimately, the Cubs managed to win the World Series that year. They held a parade to celebrate the championship and over 5 million people came out to celebrate, making it the 7th largest gathering in history.

I hope that you and I meet in heaven and we get a great seat for the big show, because it will be way over 5 million. Passages like Revelation remind us that we are not alone, that we have a Savior, and that one day we will see God’s fullness and majesty. To God be the glory!
