Remaining Steadfast in Trials

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
James 1:12 English Standard Version
Trials don’t ask permission before they arrive. They crash into our lives like a powerful waterfall we never saw coming, leaving us soaked in fear, exhaustion, and questions we can’t answer. For those walking through trials—whether in their own body or alongside someone they love—every day can feel like a test of endurance. The conversations, the uncertainty, the waiting. You might start to wonder, How much more can I take? Does God see this? Does He still love me in the midst of this pain?
James 1:12 doesn’t promise that trials will be short or easy. It doesn’t say you’ll feel strong every day. What it does promise is far greater: You are blessed when you remain steadfast. That doesn’t mean you never cry or question or stumble—it means you keep your eyes fixed, however shakily, on Jesus. And the “crown of life”? It isn’t a reward for perfect performance or unshakable positivity. It’s a promise of eternal glory—a forever free of trials and sorrow. A day when your tears will be wiped away by the very hands of God. That crown isn’t given for having it all together. It is a gift of grace for those who belong to Christ by faith—those who trust in Him, even from a difficult spot. We don’t earn salvation by enduring hardship well; we receive eternal life because Jesus endured the cross in our place. He stood the ultimate test so we could stand secure in Him.
So if your faith feels small, if your prayers feel feeble, know this: your salvation does not rest on the strength of your grip, but on the strength of His grace. And that grace is holding you fast.
You are not forgotten. You are not alone. And the crown of life promised in James 1:12 isn’t hanging on your performance—it’s secured by our Savior. So take the next step.Trust the One who has already overcome the grave. Keep going, dear one.

Greetings from Sioux Falls! Looks like you have a South Dakota connection based on your picture of Falls Park. Thanks for all your wonderful devotions. Believe I remember you from Holy Cross. Blessings on your day!
Hi Bruce! Yes — this was from our visit to Sioux Falls a few years ago! We have quite a bit of family back in SD so we make trips back there every other year or so. 🙂
