“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’”
Matthew 2:1-2 English Standard Version
I love Christmas. I love the music, the atmosphere, and the decorations. Now that I am a mother, I love sharing it all with my children. One night, after we had set up our Christmas tree, my son asked me why we put a star at the top of the tree. I told him about the wise men and the shepherds following it to find baby Jesus, the Son of God, born to Mary. I also asked him to remember what he says in chapel at school when the leader asks, “Why do we light our candles?” His eyes lit up when he realized he knew the answer, “because Jesus is the light of the world!”
I love this time of year where we get to remember that the Son of God, the incarnation of the second person of the Trinity, the light of the world, came down to be with his creation as a humble baby. God desires to be with us, and sent his Son to bear the punishment of our disobedience so that we may enjoy life eternal with him in the resurrection. God came to be with us, in flesh, and died and rose again in glory, for us. I love celebrating Christmas.
