“The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame,
All hail, said he, thou lowly maiden Mary!
Most highly favoured Lady, Gloria!”
Lyrics from “Gabriel’s Message” (based on Luke 1:26-33.46-55)
The song “Gabriel’s Message” is not often heard on Christmas carol radio stations. It’s a Basque folk song with origins in the 13th century, which tells of the annunciation of Jesus’ birth to Mary, who was to become his mother.
In Luke’s gospel, Mary, a young girl in Nazareth betrothed for marriage, receives a visit from Gabriel. Although she lives in obscurity in a town of little renown, Gabriel announces that God has found favor with her.
Think about that for a moment.
God chose Mary to raise the Savior of the world… his son.
Mary’s response was humble, “let it be to me according to your word.” She shared her joy with her cousin Elizabeth in a song:
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.”
Luke 1:46b-49 English Standard Version
Now, think about this: God has found favor with you.
In a world with over seven billion people, he knows you.
He knew who you were before you were conceived (Psalm 139:15). You are a wonderful creation in God (Psalm 139:14). God sent his son, born a baby to a virgin in a remote town, to restore you to reconciliation with God. You have favor in his grace.
Abba Father, I thank you for forming me and bringing me safely to today. Be with me as I share your love with those I meet. Thank you for your favor, and keep me in your grace. Amen.
