“Enter by the narrow gate.  For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.  For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
Matthew 7:13-14 English Standard Version

At our recent Men’s Retreat, Mick, one of our speakers, had laid out two roads, one leading to a cross, and the other to a garbage can.  He asked us to answer these questions, “Which road are you on?  Do you have one foot on each road?  What is distracting you from being on the road to the cross?”  All of us men were thoughtful and convicted by Mick’s questions.

Jesus tells us that the road to the cross, the road to Him, is the only road that brings Life, for Jesus Himself is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  Jesus tells us that the road is narrow and hard that leads to Him, but the road that leads to destruction is wide and easy.

Why is the road to Jesus and to Life so hard?  Because it means that we must humble ourselves and admit that we are sinners who need a Savior and a Lord.  Pride, wanting to live our life our way instead of God’s way, dies hard.  Repentance comes hard to us stubborn, rebellious humans, whether we need to admit our sins to God or to others.

What road are you on right now?  Are you on the road of pride and rebellion that lead to destruction?  Or are you on the road of repentance and humility that leads to Jesus and eternal life?  The decision to walk the road that leads to Life may seem hard, but what joy it is to be with Jesus, the Friend of Sinners and the Shepherd of our souls!  Jesus turns no one away who cries out, “Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner!”  In Him you will find Life and Joy and Peace.  Amen.
