“And the Lord said to Moses, ‘The following instructions are for those seeking ceremonial purification from a skin disease. Those who have been healed must be brought to the priest, who will examine them at a place outside the camp.'”
“Then the priest must present the sin offering to purify the person who was cured of the skin disease. After that, the priest will slaughter the burnt offering and offer it on the altar along with the grain offering. Through this process, the priest will purify the person who was healed, and the person will be ceremonially clean.”
Leviticus 14:1-3, 19-20 New Living Translation
The book of Leviticus describes the rules God established for Israel to live a life set apart from the world. When someone had a skin disease, they were placed outside Israel’s camp until they seemed healed. The priest was the one who could declare them healed and a purification ceremony, which included a sacrifice and offerings before the Lord, was required.
But, because they were unclean and they couldn’t get the sacrifices for themselves, God ordained the priests to pick up their sacrifices on their behalf so they could offer them and be clean. This law, created years before Christ came to the earth, revealed God‘s plan and love for us. For we are unclean and cannot do anything to make ourselves clean, so Jesus was offered instead as the high priest. He became the sacrifice for us.
God had this plan in mind from the beginning, revealing it to Israel through His laws. He loved all His people so much that he provided a way to be cleansed so we could be able to approach His throne of grace. We are atoned for because of the sacrifice ordained by God and fulfilled in His Son.
We thank you, Lord, for how you redeemed and rescued us through your blood that cleanses us. Amen.
