Where Do We Fit In?

“In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”
John 14:2-3 English Standard Version
In our house, we are a performing arts family. I am a singer and choir director. My husband plays the saxophone, as well as many other instruments, and is a piano technician by trade. My daughter is in choir and takes dance classes, and both of my children take piano lessons. And we all love musical theater!
Recently my husband needed to tune a piano in a large performance space on a weekend, and so my children and I tagged along. I thought, what a cool experience for them, to have this whole theater to themselves. What will they do with it? When we arrived, my husband went straight for the piano, and I went center stage, of course. My son ran all over, enjoying the space and (supervised) freedom to explore. I wondered what my daughter would do. I was itching to sing and I asked her if she wanted to come sing on the stage, as she does love to sing, but she didn’t want to. Instead she went out into the audience with her book and spent almost the whole time we were there moving around from seat to seat, experiencing different places to read.
Even though the places weren’t entirely what I expected them to be, we all found our place inside the theatre. For myself, being a musician is a huge part of who I am, and I’m grateful every single day for the music in my life. But for my kids, it’s what they’re growing up with. I do wonder if later on they’ll worry that they don’t fit in with our family if they’re NOT into performing arts.
How many of us worry about where we fit in, and why we feel like we sometimes don’t fit in anywhere? What I hope to remember and impress upon my children is that no matter our place on earth, we fit in with God. Jesus said His Father’s house has many rooms, and that He goes to prepare a place for us. That means there is a room for YOU, where you fit in perfectly!
