“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

– John 3:8, English Standard Version

Sometimes it is a soft breeze – sometimes it is a powerful, rushing wind. Sometimes it whispers, sometimes it roars! We know the power of the wind – especially where I live, in eastern Colorado, the wind is a powerful force. As Jesus points out to Nicodemus in John 3, the wind is also somewhat unpredictable. It moves where it wishes – we simply see the results.

So it is with the Spirit. On Pentecost, there were signs – a mighty rushing wind, tongues of fire. But the true sign of the Spirit was the preaching! It was the message about Jesus, that Word spoken that is where the Spirit does the best work. It is this Word that recreates, that brings life, that restores – the word “I forgive you” the word “You will rise again” the word “Jesus loves you.” We might not know how the Spirit works, but where these promises are spoken, where God’s Word is spoken in it’s fullness, we can be sure that God’s Spirit is at work. Sometimes it is an overwhelming sense of joy and peace, sometimes it is simply quiet reassurance. Sometimes it is deep conviction, sometimes it is clarity and wisdom. But in all these things, the Spirit is working through the Word, a mighty power restoring, renewing, and resurrecting.
