This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 ESV
OK, I have to do this, this, and this today. What are we doing for dinner? I’m not looking forward to that meeting. I’m tired of these appointments. I don’t want to have that conversation. I hope *this* doesn’t happen. I hope *this* does. Wait, what are we doing for dinner again?
Then there’s (what I like to call) the plot twist season. Maybe we expected it; but maybe not. What should I be doing? Should I make a change? How can I better fill my time?
I think at one point in life or another, we experience each scenario. There are peaks and valleys. The demand for our energy intensifies at various phases, while another juncture feels silent. The Psalm for today seemed to tap me on the shoulder during my daily walk. THIS is the day. So is tomorrow and the next day. In fact, every day is the day. No matter what is happening; what’s monopolizing our time; what has us frazzled or frustrated, busy or bored. The Lord made this day. Not only that; but He made us to be part of this day with intention. We are here right now on purpose.
To take a cue from our Catechism: what does this mean? For starters, let’s focus on gratitude and all HE has done–for the many blessings we’ve received, not the desires we feel we deserve. Secondly, where is our focus? If it continues to be on ourselves, then we’re in trouble. Let’s ask Him. Be bold. Where is the Lord leading? How is He calling us to serve and use our spiritual gifts? When we start to think and serve outside of ourselves, we actually become more and more attuned to our own identity and purpose. It’s a win-win. How amazing is that? This is the day. Live like it. Let’s follow His lead.
