When We Can’t See What’s Ahead

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1
Our beautiful view of the foothills and distant mountains in the Colorado Springs area was completely obstructed. A thick wall of haze covered America’s Mountain. What a confusing and eerie scene. Beyond that, we could feel the effects. Poor air quality translated into respiratory issues, headaches, eye problems and more. Haziness creates concern and worry. How long will this last? How will we be affected? When will things be “normal”?
Much like the recent pandemic (and most things in life) this is completely out of our control. And yet, how often do we spend time worrying about the future? How do we respond when we have no idea what’s ahead–when we can’t see through the haze? Anxiety can quickly fog our brain and envelop our thoughts. The haziness could create confusion, fear and doubt. We might slip into that all-too-familiar mode of thinking we need to take control. There may even be seasons of isolation. Have you been here?
It’s a common struggle, and a battle that Believers encounter daily. That tension between what we have written on our hearts and know to be true, mixed and muddled with our flawed, sheep-like nature. There is good news! We have endless access to the one and only remedy. Our gentle Shepherd, brave Warrior and Lord continues to fight for us.
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
Exodus 14:14
Sometimes it’s hard to see or understand what’s ahead. That’s when we dig deep. We take cues from King David, looking back at the Lord’s faithfulness and counting our blessings. With such busy schedules, constant concerns for loved ones and never-ending lists, it’s easy to start living ahead of today. Every morning is a new opportunity to start again and live each moment with intention. We press on and continue the fight — which means releasing control, trusting God to guide and provide. After all, wouldn’t you rather rest in His promises and plans? Next time things start to look a little hazy, let’s encourage one another in that assurance and allow the Lord to prepare the way.
