Recently, I stayed at a Denver hotel for a training conference with my husband. When I entered the bathroom, a lighted mirror greeted me in front of the larger bathroom mirror. I found it odd, that when I turned on the main light switch, a high-intensity illuminated looking glass was immediately available to point out each and every flaw on my face at high magnification.
Confronted with various age lines, skin discolorations and blemishes, I was fixated on my reflection noticing every perceived defect and abnormality. If I am honest, I must admit that I often find myself pointing out imperfections in myself, my husband, my children and even complete strangers. Why are we as human beings obsessed, not only on our own flaws and insecurities, but those of others?
A constant barrage of false advertising and media marketing tells me that I need to improve my image so that I, and others, will find me more attractive. Some of the most common product offenders include: revolutionary weight loss treatments, wonder vitamins, anti-aging cream, acne medicine, miracle makeup, waxing products, pattern-baldness remedies and hair color. If I just buy these products, I will then feel more youthful, connected and alive. What a bunch of malarkey!
If only I could see what God sees through his son Jesus Christ: a faultless and fabulous being – not in need of any cure-all prescriptions of this world. My misguided fascination and preoccupation with my own shortcomings blinds me to picture myself through the lens of Christ.
Lord, let me turn my gaze from all outward worldly reflections, and take a moment to admire your creations as you see them. Help me to remember that I, and others, are made flawless and truly alive through Christ.

Thank you for an inspiring post. As the mother of a teenage daughter, I am amazed at the mirror being held up to my daughter via the media amd distressed that she feels the need to live up to such shallow and false expectations. Thanks for a lovely prayer to make sure to avoid being another negative voice in her head.
