Stepping Out in Confidence

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us

in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through

the appearance of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and

has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”
2 Timothy 1:7-10 NIV

I can relate to a spirit of timidity. Time and time again I find myself lacking confidence when God calls me to step out of my comfort zone and into His greater purpose for my life. I so often forget the words of 2 Corinthians 12:  “For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Timidity can come when we forget who’s on our side. David didn’t set out to fight Goliath because of his training, his strength, or his wit. David stepped in front of Goliath because He knew God was with him. He knew God would fight the battle. David merely needed to step out.

The same is true for us today. We face each day, each trial, each temptation with a God who is our rock and our fortress. We step out, not because of our talents and merit, but because we know who is on our side. God has given us a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline. He has equipped us and He will lead us.

We face any and all suffering for the Gospel, knowing we have hope. When life feels difficult and overwhelming, we lean into the power of God. We know that our God is good. He has redeemed us and saved us and awaits life with us. This salvation comes through grace alone. Jesus Christ destroyed death by taking on the punishment of our sins and our wayward choices.

Immortality and eternal life wait for us on the other side. There is no reason for timidity, shame, or lack of confidence when we know that Christ, who laid down His life for us, is on our side.
