“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9

I’ve never been a person who is good at change, and I’ve discovered there is a certain type of transition that is especially difficult for me. It’s the transition from something bright and happy into something darker and harder, specifically with time: I struggle in the fall, as that is a transition from summer into winter, I struggle with Sunday nights, (the transition from the weekend into the work week) and I struggle at sundown, (the transition from day into night). What’s interesting is that once I’m in the new thing- winter, Monday, night time- I’m okay! But the between-time is rough.

We are about to enter a new year. A lot of people I’ve seen are happy to leave the old year behind because it’s been a difficult one for them. But I find myself apprehensive. What is the new year going to hold? What new challenges lie ahead that I will need to face?

The good news is that whatever lies ahead, difficult or delightful, we are not alone. As the verse from Joshua says, God is with us wherever we go. He is always there and He is always in control, so we can count on and rely on Him. As you celebrate tonight and ring in the new year, I hope you can enjoy the transition comforted and knowing that God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and He loves you!
