“…the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.  And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Acts 2:20-21 English Standard Version

The heavens are full of amazingly wonderful and terrifying things.  About a week ago, Margaret and I observed a “blood moon”, a phenomena that occurs when a lunar eclipse is at its full height.  The prophet Joel speaks of the sun being turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the day of the Lord comes, when the Lord Jesus returns to take his people home.  For many people such ominous signs in the heavens are terrifying because they are beyond their control and it shows that the Lord is in charge of the universe, not them.

Peter, in his Pentecost sermon, quotes from the prophet Joel about such signs.  But the signs that the people observe are not blood moons, but the coming of the Holy Spirit as God convicts the world of sin and righteousness and judgment.  The Holy Spirit gives believers faith and boldness to testify to the fact that the world is passing away and humans are not in control of it.  But at the same time, everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.

Are you afraid of circumstances and phenomena beyond your control?  Are you fearful of what may happen to you if everything changes and your very life is threatened?

Do not be afraid!  Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.  The world may change and many people may be terrified, but our God is in control.  And our God is the One who sent His own Son into the world to save us from sin and give us eternal life.  No matter what may happen, we have true security in our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen!
