“You have said, “Seek my face.”
My heart says to you,
“Your face, Lord, do I seek.”
Hide not your face from me.”
Psalm 27:8-9a English Standard Version
I recently took a walk just after sunrise. As I passed this flower, I noticed that it was not facing upwards towards the sky, as is its usual posture. Instead, its face was turned to the east.
At any time throughout the day, visit these flowers and notice that they don’t stay in one position. They open their blossoms at sunrise, and then turn their open faces towards the Sun. The blossoms twist all day, almost straining their little stems to be closer to the light and warmth. Nothing distracts them from their apparent focus. At the end of the day, they close their blooms in preparation for the next day.
Plants, like people, have a circadian rhythm that influences their activities during the day. We may find we wake up and fall asleep at more or less the same time each day. People will sometimes complain that they’re “off of their clock” when their routines are upset. Although our routines often change from day to day, God’s presence and love is constant.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23 English Standard Version
One thing that can help with our daily rhythms is turning our eyes towards the Son. Let us set our minds on Jesus, the Son of God, every morning. Let every day be an act of worship. Start the day with gratitude for sleep. Ask God to guide your steps in your day. Spend time in prayer. Be thankful for everything you have. Be at peace with God in Christ Jesus.
“The Lord will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.”
Psalm 121:8 English Standard Version
