Very Early in the Morning

Remembering Resurrection

“On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”

I love the early morning. Once I wake up, there is something about the beauty of those early hours that cannot be replaced.

But that first Easter morning was different. I wonder if the women woke up that morning ready to roll, or if it took them a few moments to remember, to run back through the events of the last few days and to know that yes, indeed, he was gone. They would not hear their Lord’s voice. He was dead, in the tomb. And so, early that morning, perhaps they were overcome with that grief, that grief of an empty space in their life.

But as the Psalmist writes, weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes in the morning!

This Easter Monday, revel in that joy. For the one who was gone is now gone from the tomb and the empty place in the lives of his followers has been replaced with an empty tomb. He has risen, ascended on high, and reigns over all things so that even on the hardest mornings, you may know your Lord is with you. May each sunrise remind you of the joy of the first resurrection morning, and each waking breath be an opportunity to practice your own resurrection.
