“I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!”
Psalm 27:13-14 New Revised Standard Version
A little girl went to church and decided to sit in the very front pew. It was Advent. The créche scene next to the altar still had no baby Jesus. The Pastor talked about waiting. She made it through half the sermon before she was done. Not with waiting. She was waiting. She believed. In her estimation, the Pastor had talked long enough! How many have felt like that over the years! After worship she participated in a children’s reenactment of the birth of Jesus. She w
as waiting. She believed.
It may look as though the girl and the Pastor were the only ones in worship that day. They were not. Behind and to the left of her, and in the balcony as well, the worship space was full. We never wait alone, though it can feel like it sometimes. We never believe alone, though it can feel like it sometimes. When we feel like we have waited long enough for the Lord to come to us, when we feel the temptation to question our faith, look around. Go to worship and look around you. You are not the only one.
When the time was fulfilled, when it was exactly the right moment in human history, Christ came. The waiting was over. Believing won. Christ will come again. So, still we wait. Still we believe. There are some in this world who wait, who sorrow, who are afraid. Just like we can be. They wait. Christ will come to them. When we walk into their lives. When you walk in a sit beside them, as it were. We wait. We believe.
Thank you, Lord, for little girls. For their waiting. For their waiting with us. For their waiting for us? Thank you, Lord, for little girls. Thank you for their believing. We wait together. We believe together..
