Waiting for Mercy

by Rev Douglas Brauner

The Wait Is Over!

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking on this SoundCloud link.

“I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.”
Psalm 130:5-6 New International Version

Don’t get the wrong idea from this picture, I’m NOT a Coke person. I’m more of Pepsi guy. The argument of whether Coke is better than Pepsi or Pepsi is better than Coke isn’t remotely connected to the point of this devotion.

This is a picture about waiting.

This restaurant was closed when I snapped this picture. It wouldn’t be open for hours. The tables, chairs and umbrellas are in a holding pattern. They’re in waiting mode. Around five in the afternoon the wait staff unfolded the umbrellas and prepared the table for guests. Shortly thereafter the guests would begin to arrive. By seven in the evening every table was full, conversations and laughter filled the evening air.

The waiting was over for these tables.

The psalmist is waiting for the Lord, but for what gift is he waiting? Is he waiting for God to prosper his way? Is he waiting for the people around him to change? Is he waiting for God to strike his enemies?

He is waiting for God to forgive him.

“O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?”
Psalm 130:2 English Standard Version

Have you been a position where you were waiting for the Lord to forgive you? Like these umbrellas you waited for God to act, to unfold his mercy over you, to set the table with his grace?

The wait is over. Jesus has unfolded his umbrella of mercy and set his table with grace. His arms are the umbrella that was unfolded on a cross for you. You need no longer wait. You are forgiven.

  1. Pepsi? Well, I gave up soft drinks, but Occasionally, I will splurge on a diet caffeine free Coke. BUT with just a shot of real coke on top! Remember Soda jerks? I do. Thanks again Pastor Doug! Will Colebank
