Slow Journey

“For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God…And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”
Romans 8:19, 23-25 English Standard Version
Have you ever been on a walk with a two-year-old? If you put them in a stroller, you are weighted down and cannot move very quickly (especially in a double stroller). If you let them out to walk on their own, the pace is even slower because they think every rock they see is the best rock they have ever seen.
Walking with a two-year-old is the best description I have of waiting with persistent hope for what is to come, while maybe groaning inwardly in the process. We are waiting for the hope we know in Christ to be fulfilled, where everything is going to be made new. We do not know when this will happen, but we trust in Him who promises it. The journey there may feel like a time of groaning, waiting for the next thing in a world where sin and death are still very visible. It can feel like a slow journey. Even though our hope is not visible, the end is not in sight yet, we trust that it is coming. We hope in the Lord every new day.
