“How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?”
Proverbs 6:9 English Standard Version
A turtle sitting in the sun on a log in the middle of a pond. A man slumped on a bench engrossed in his cell phone. A child slouched on a couch eating snacks and watching TV. These are all pictures of the sluggard, a lazy person doing nothing and caring about nothing and no one.
Are you a spiritual sluggard? Do you go through the day without prayer or God’s Word or thought of His love and mercy toward you? Does that spiritual sluggishness show up in your lack of caring and sensitivity toward others? Do you exist in your own selfish and egocentric little world with no thought of God’s grace toward you?
It is time to wake up from your spiritual sleep! It is time to cast off your sinful sluggishness and turn your face to Jesus Christ and His salvation for you! As Paul says in Ephesians 5:14, “…Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” It is time to arise from your self centered lethargy and let God in!
You are designed by God to be following after Him and living in His presence and love continually. You were redeemed by Christ Jesus to be His disciple, to follow Him, to be about your Father’s business. You were loved by God to quit wasting the time He has given you and learn what it means to be working in His harvest field. Do you hear Jesus calling you to join Him in saving this world? Get up and get on with His work and ways! Wake up!
