“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.”
Psalm 23:1-2 English Standard Version

When the winds are calm and boats have returned to their docks, lakes are very peaceful places. It’s often so quiet you might hear nothing but a bird flying overhead. God often seems nearer in silence combined with the beauty of His creation. David knew this when he wrote Psalm 23. In Hebrew, “still waters” translates to waters of rest. As a shepherd he often led sheep to calm waters so they could drink safely. He experienced God, His kind shepherd, leading him beside waters of rest where David could focus on his Creator and find rest for his soul.

In scripture as in life, water has so many facets. God often showed His power in water, destroying enemies and rescuing His people using waters that He formed into a devastating flood. He parted the waters of the Red Sea and of the Jordan to help Israel escape from her enemies and provided drinking water for Israel out of a rock. Jesus turned water into wine, walked on water and calmed the stormy sea. He reached out to the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, calling Himself the Living Water that would forever quench her soul.

We can’t live without Christ as our Living Water to satisfy our thirsty souls. When God, our kind and faithful shepherd, leads you to the still waters of rest, let Him restore your soul and give you His true tranquility and peace.
