“And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’”
Revelation 21:5 English Standard Version
We said we would never forget.
It is hard to believe that it has been 23 years since the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It was 23 years ago that we stood transfixed on our televisions as we watched the crumbing of these mighty structures.
Yet many Americans have no memory of that day. For those of us who lived through the tragedy, it is hard to believe that people who are in their early twenties and younger were born after this horrific event.
In a literal sense, you cannot remember something you never experienced.
Over a hundred years ago, the building pictured here had some function in the mining industry near Victor, Colorado, yet none of us have any memory of it. It simply lays as a ruin of the past.
This is not how God views us. Yes, the building of our lives collapses through aging, but John reminds us that God is in the business of making all things new. There is something that happens to those who have been baptized into the life and death of Jesus. He continually makes our spirits new. This newness is rooted in God’s promise that one day he will make all things new, the old will not haunt us and the new will be our reality.
On this day that we remember the tragedy of lives killed in a terrorist attack, may we also look forward to the day when death will be no more, when Satan will be vanquished, and the battle against the old person will be over.
Come quickly, Lord Jesus! Come and make all things new!
