“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born… of God.”
John 1:12-13 English Standard Version

What does it mean to be family?  Usually what we mean by a family are those who were born of parents and raised together in their home.  Here we have a picture of Margaret and me with our son Tim, his wife, Kim, and our grandson, Henry.  A three generation family!

But what does it mean to be in God’s family?  Those in God’s family are those who received salvation in Jesus, those who believed in Him as Lord and Savior.  Those in God’s family are those who were received into His family not because they are biologically related, but those who have come into the family through the blood of Jesus Christ upon the cross.

In our human families, love and closeness can be easily broken.  Death, divorce, distance, unforgiveness, bitterness, and addictions are just a few of the factors that can break up the connections we have as a family.

But in God’s family sin and death cannot destroy the bond we have with our Heavenly Father.  Through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord, we have peace with God and with one another and nothing in all creation can separate us from His love.  Nothing can break up our forever family!

Lord, thank you for family.  Thank you for those whom you have given me to love and be loved by.  And thank you especially, Lord, that you have made me part of your forever family through the Sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus.  Amen.
