“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Luke 2:11 English Standard Version

I love Christmas.  The lights, the bells, the trees, the songs, the gifts, the joy.  But in the midst of all the many wonderful good things it is easy to miss what Christmas is all about, the essence of Christmas among all the bustle and travel and Santa Clauses on T-Rexes.

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” The coming of the King was heralded by angels but witnessed by lowly shepherds and far away foreigners.  It is easy to miss this Savior!  Born in a barn, born into a common, poor family, it is easy to miss the Savior of the world.  Born to suffer and die upon a cross, not taking glory to himself, but humbly obeying the will of his Father, it is easy to miss him.

And yet the message of the angels will be proclaimed.  Sinful humans may reject him, but still he comes to save us.  He will be proclaimed at the center of it all, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.  People may seek to obscure this simple, disturbing message but it will be proclaimed.  He is the Savior and he will save us and he offers forgiveness and adoption to all who would receive him.  That, Charlie Brown, is what Christmas is all about…

How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is giv’n!
So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heav’n
No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him, still the dear Christ enters in.
