It’s estimated that more than a third of all US bridges need major repair or replacement. We drive over bridges frequently, trusting that they are structurally sound and will support us as we pass over them. Yet when one does collapse there are often major injuries or death. Concrete and steel come crashing down on top of vehicles, and the weight is crushing to anyone underneath.
“Let those who are wise understand these things. Let those with discernment listen carefully. The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them. But in those paths sinners stumble and fall.”
Hosea 14:9 New Living Translation
We encounter people whose ideas seem exciting and appealing when they address our joy-stealing struggles. We long to be led over an enchanted bridge to a pain-free life where problems are solved with just a positive outlook and a magic formula or two. Deep down, though, we hopefully ask ourselves “Is this idea really sound?”
God gave us a tool for this very situation—discernment. Discernment is distinguishing God’s purposes and words from earthly purposes and words. Discernment draws us back to Scripture to seek truth from the source of all truth through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit helps us discern Christ’s principles versus worldly wisdom.
We also never want to hurt anyone by giving them advice that is not based on the true word of God. Our foundation in Him must be built upon Scripture, which never fails and keeps us on course. God has promised His wisdom and discernment to all who pray for this powerful gift.
“O Lord, listen to my cry; give me the discerning mind you promised.”
Psalm 119:169 New Living Translation
