What’s A Sacrifice?

By Pastor Don Schatz

A Promise for Lent

For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.”  I Kings 17:14  New Revised Standard Version

Elijah promised the widow of Zarephath.  While he stayed in her house she would have food.  She and her son.  And Elijah.  So she emptied her jug of oil and her flour jar, and made bread.  But they did not empty.  Three years they lasted, until the famine was over.

Jesus emptied himself of any claim that divinity might have provided.  He emptied himself for us, and one day he would say, “I have come that they may be full of life to the full.”  Even during Lent, you have life to the full.  Because Christ emptied himself for you and calls you beloved.
