We all have a hobby. Whether it’s being outdoors, going on a hike, painting, playing, watching sports, and so on. Some of us are blessed to have a career where we get to work with our hobby. For me, my hobby is sports. Basketball was my favorite sport in high school, and it was the only sport I played for all four years, but my favorite sport is baseball and I love my Colorado Rockies. Just recently I have taken a liking to hockey, because of its fast pace and intensity. I could watch sports all day long.
However, sometimes our hobbies, or our jobs, can become idols. We place more value in the things we love to do than we should, and sometimes they take God’s place. This happens in my life, too. Our hobbies, and our jobs, are wonderful gifts that God has given us for the enjoyment of our lives. We face so many trials in life, and God has given us these other things for our enjoyment and for the uplifting of our neighbors. They are great things, but they should always be done with an attitude that is preset on the glory of God!
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24 English Standard Version
When we work, or play, we receive something in return. When we work we get a paycheck and when we play we are refreshed, but our real inheritance does not dwell in a paycheck or in fun. Those are things that we do to provide for our families, and others, and to enjoy their company. Our real inheritance is our salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ. He gave his life that we may not only live, but enjoy living. In a response of gratefulness and love, for our God, let us enjoy those things and do them to bring glory only to God.
