A Welcomed Interruption

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:5 ESV
As a child, I remember the pure anticipation of Christmas. It was almost too much to take! I knew I would be seeing grandparents and other family members. Grandma’s soups never failed to be perfect. Mom’s toffee bars provided instant happiness, along with a sugar rush. My brother and I were always asking, “presents”? (Confession: we still do this.) We had/have a hard time being patient and waiting…for everything. But God is incredible in the way He provides just what we need AND a much-needed reminder at the perfect moment. My most vivid memories happened at Christmas Eve service when everything else was stilled.
The night was truly silent. The church was mesmerizing–lights aglow and beautiful, familiar melodies filled the sanctuary. My mind was focused and my heart was overwhelmed as I pondered this sweet baby with the weight of the world on his shoulders. It’s emotional and heavy for young hearts; yet God is at work here. As the lights go dim and the candles gleam, we sing “Silent Night” (often a second time in German).
We need those moments. We need those welcomed interruptions–to get out of our own minds and back to the eternal perspective. While gathering with loved ones, exchanging gifts and preparing magnificent food are definite blessings from the Lord to cherish, God wants our attention. He’s pursuing us, drawing us near. He uses so many avenues: Christmas Eve service, other Believers, His word, the Holy Spirit, blessings and even trials. The ultimate goal is to be reconciled to Him, regardless of how we get there.
At first I questioned the verse that found me for this devotion. It didn’t feel “Christmas-y” enough, I thought. But it points to God and Jesus, to our Guide and Savior. The baby that was born on (or around) Christmas is the very reason we even anticipate this season. We are so very blessed to be called His. Let’s receive the reminders with joy, remembering that fact this week and always.
