Knowing God and Yourself

The common question people ask of themselves, “Who am I?” can be better answered when answering the question “Who is I Am?” I Am is the name God refers to Himself in the Bible.
“God said to Moses, “ I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘ I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14 ESV
“Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”” John 8:58 ESV
Getting to know God and his nature is how we get to know who we are. Our life purposes unfold when we unite ourselves with Him and his goals. When I have operated separately from God, which I still attempt to do, my life comes unhinged in many areas and the road gets rocky.
Having patience with ourselves is a big help as we progress in the spiritual life. A priest friend reminds me on a regular basis that I am human. The work that I am in the process with my life is, just that, a process.
As I get to know God, and in the process become more like Him, I am constantly reminded that He is still God.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8 ESV
“And he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. ‘” Revelation 21:6 ESV
As I learn and absorb more of God, I become who He truly created me to be. This is an ongoing process throughout our lives that will not end until we get to heaven.
Many times I thought the process of becoming my true self was complete to only then experience God at a new level. I now know that the process of becoming like Christ is an ongoing part of the Christian life.
