Out of the blue, this beautiful Great Horned Owl appeared right outside my dining room window. Even with our barking dog, he remained for about ten minutes watching me intently. My son was also able to open the front door and take a couple photos.
After a bit of research I have learned that the Great Horned Owl is the largest owl in Colorado, and the biggest tufted owl in North America. Its eyes are the most prominent of all owl species, with vision ten times better than humans during the day and 100 times sharper at night. Their eyes do not shift back and forth, but this owl instead rotates its head up to 270 degrees to see its surroundings and prey.
It was curious that the owl came to that particular branch, at the specific time of the day, when I was in the room where I could observe it. Animals are wonderful companions, but they also have many cultural symbolisms. In African and Native American traditions, owls represent death and evil. Some tribes use them as protection from danger. European literature also depicts owls as ill-omens. In Japan, the owl is considered to be good luck, and its image is often carried as a charm. Modern Western folklore suggests that owls are wise creatures. This dates back to ancient Greece, where the owl was the symbol of the goddess of wisdom, Athena.
I found this owl to be a majestic creature, and like to think of it as a reminder that God always promises to watch over us. He sends protection for His own in every circumstance. His presence will always surround us. Whether this owl intended that message or not from his perch, I was still comforted, and my day was brightened.
Lord, may I always remember that you will never leave me, and will constantly provide your eternal defense.
