“And [Jesus] said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”Matthew 4:19 English Standard Version
“So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153….” John 21:11 English Standard Version
On the waterfront near my home, where I walk most mornings, the vending machine in today picture cropped up this spring. The first thought that came to mind when I initially beheld this 21st century convenience store was, “Everything but the fish.” For me, they left out the most important part. I did not have much luck fishing. That’s why I stopped about 25 years ago and found a fish market I like.
Actually, Jesus was ahead of the times. He had this idea two thousand years ago. And he’s made a go of it. The Apostles were the vending machine. “I will make you fishers of men.” Empowered by the Holy Spirit, they set out into the world to haul in the catch. Trust me, there are more than 153 followers of Jesus in the world today. He brought, and brings still, the fish and spiritual vending machine together in his grace.
Who were, or perhaps are still, the vending machines that Jesus used in your life? To catch you with the surprising news of forgiveness, grace and salvation in the Gospel? Who brought you to Jesus, he who promises life to the full, and who still helps you discover what a truly full life means in his Kingdom?
I am guessing that there are those who would list you as God’s vending machine of mercy in their lives. The Lord fills you with faith, hope and love–and the Spirit makes sure that you share them. When you do, people are blessed. The Kingdom grows. But God’s boat won’t sink with the weight. There is always room for more.
Jesus is called ‘The Good Shepherd’, ‘The Vine’, ‘The Door’, ‘The Way, the Truth and the Life.’ But the Scriptures do not call him ‘The Good Fisherman.’ Not that he wouldn’t be! But Jesus decided to use us, to make and equip us as his fisherman. Catching souls with grace.
If you fish, or if like me you buy fish, maybe share Jesus today. Or tomorrow. Hear the voice of Jesus. Remember that to which we have been called. Sharing Christ.
