Preparing Our Hearts for Easter

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4 English Standard Version

Every spring, we prepare for new life. We clean, prune, and make space. Lent invites us to do the same with our hearts. For forty days, we slow down. That slowness can feel unnatural, especially if we’re used to busy hands and feet. Our hands reach instinctively for what is missing. We feel the quiet. The longing. We examine what we’ve allowed to crowd our souls—distractions, pride, self-reliance. Like Jesus in the wilderness, we step away from comfort so we can remember what truly sustains us.

Lent is not about earning Easter. It is about preparing for it. It is about loosening our grip on temporary things so we can cling more tightly to Christ. When we fast, we feel our hunger. When we pray, we feel our dependence. When we repent, we feel our need.

And when Easter morning comes, resurrection joy feels even brighter—because we have walked through the quiet, honest work of preparation first.
