“Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks.” Proverbs 1:20-21 English Standard Version

You’ve probably all seen the image, whether in movies or comics, of a person with the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other. The little devil always has a sly little voice saying, “come on, live a little.” The angel always says something along the lines of, “you know better, you know the consequences.” Unfortunately, I do not believe this to be an accurate picture of the decision making process in a situation of right or wrong.

The reality is that we need no devil on our shoulder to convince us to make the self-indulging choice. Ever since the fall, in the Garden of Eden, our hearts inclination is preset to self-indulgence and self-preservation. The devil of course still tempts us, but honestly his job isn’t too hard. He doesn’t have to make a strong argument. We often fail to see what is right in front of us since we are blinded by our own fleshly desires, as well as by the devil’s attempts to lead us astray.

God does not withhold wisdom from anyone. In fact, Proverbs 1 tells us that God, and his wisdom, are everywhere, and he offers his wisdom to all people in all places. Sometimes this voice is not always a silent whisper. There are times when this wisdom cries out to us, making itself plainly known. Everywhere God is with us, showing us the way, even when we are not listening. God is there, graciously offering wisdom to us. Wisdom is freely given to those who ask God for it. Where else does wisdom come but from the God of the Universe? It is in wisdom that God created everything.

Let us all seek wisdom from the almighty Creator, who offers us His wisdom in His love for us.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 English Standard VersionĀ
