Wonder

Alignment

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”
Psalm 8:3-4.  English Standard Version

There is a song lyric that contains this line: ‘God of wonders beyond our Galaxy…’  Last month there was an alignment of planets and the moon just after sunset.  I could see it from my front porch.  Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon.  Already too low on the horizon was the planet Mercury.  God of wonders indeed.  Within our Galaxy or beyond its borders!  God of creation cares for us.  He loves us.  He thinks about us.  Wonder of wonders.

One parish I served created a phone ministry.  We trained about twenty members.  On a given night each week, they would assemble at church.  First prayer.  Then they would phone ten families in the congregation.  The purpose was to stay in touch; to ask about needs; to ask for prayer concerns.  Each call concluded with prayer.  Our congregational members mattered.  We wanted them to know they were thought about, remembered and loved with God’s own love.

God thinks about us.  He remembers us (but forgets our sin through Jesus!).  He watches over us.  He loves us.  Have you seen the Milky Way?  The Psalmist was filled with wonder that God would even remember he created us on planet Earth when he has all the work of his fingers to watch over.  But God is not distant, though distances in space are all but incomprehensible.  “I am with you always,” said Jesus.  He is as near as a breath, as a prayer, as a thought.

God cares for you.  Look at the stars tonight.  Remember.  And rejoice.
