Where Can I Go From Your Spirit?

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths you are there.”
Psalm 139:7-9 New International Version
The picture in today’s devotion is a seascape off the coast near Johannesburg. My son, Tim, just spent the holidays with good friends in South Africa and sent me this beautiful picture.
Although Tim traveled far, far away to the opposite side of the world, I was not fearful for him. For I knew that no matter where he might go, the Lord is there. If you and I go up to the heavens, into the depths, far across the sea, or even into outer space, the Lord is still there.
The prophet Jonah discovered that fact. Although he tried to flee from the presence of the Lord, God came and found him. David, the writer of this Psalm verse, knew that, too. When he had to flee into the wilderness and hide for years at a time away from all he knew, the Lord was still there. Our God is the Creator of the universe, and no matter where you go, you are still within His reach.
For some like Jonah who are fleeing from God, that may be troubling, but this is wonderful news for all who love to be in the presence of the Lord. No matter what your circumstances, no matter what your troubles, no matter what your situation may be, the Lord is there.
The Lord knew you before you were born. He knew you when you were redeemed in the waters of Baptism. He knows you when you are in trouble, want or lonely. The Lord will not leave you.
Wherever you may be… the Lord is there!
