“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly… but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:6,8 English Standard Version
While going on a short hike, I followed my friend wearing this shirt. I stared at it while I stared at the glorious mountains around me. “You say I am loved.” The God who made the heavens, the God who can move mountains, the God who made life, died a brutal death on a cross for me.
In his death, he labels us. He labels us loved, redeemed, and worthy of sacrifice. This is not by any actions that we do, or any effort we can give on our part. Paul even says, we are weak, ungodly sinners, but still God gave his Son to die for us, so that we may be raised to new life with him in his resurrection.
You say I am loved, so that is what I am.
Because I know that I am loved, there is no other label that can take hold of me. My identity is bound to Christ on that cross and he calls me one of his own in my baptism. There is nothing more assuring or comforting than knowing that God has claimed me as his child and told me I am loved.
When you feel caught in your failure, when you feel overwhelmed by the burdens of this world, when you feel terrified by death and sin in this world, remember that Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross so that he might be with you. The God who made the heavens, the God who can move mountains, the God who made life, died a brutal death on a cross for you.
You are worthy of so much because God says that you are.
